EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette volleyball team made quick work of visiting Patriot League opponent Holy Cross in four sets (26-24, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21) Friday night inside Kirby Sports Center.
Sophomore
Carol Ulichney posted a season-high 13 kills while hitting .250. Freshman
Emma Patmon recorded a career high in kills with 16, coming off two back-to-back matches with 14 kills. Patmon hit .286 on the evening.
The first set contained a lot of back-and-forth action, giving spectators 10 tie scores and six lead changes. Ulichney tied the game with a kill at 24 apiece, which was assisted by junior
Abby Nieporte. Ulichney tallied a kill to end the set (26-24) assisted by senior
Alyssa Vitale.
The Crusaders got off to a hot start going up 4-0 to begin the second set. Rachel Johnson and Abbie Lane were Holy Cross' top performers on the night, combining for 27 kills. Lafayette was down 8-4 before it went on a 6-0 run. A few attack errors from the Crusaders, along with a kill from senior
Gracie Gibson put the Leopards back in front 10-8. The Crusaders fought back, going on a 4-0 run, but it proved to not be enough. Lafayette took the second set 25-18.
The third set favored Holy Cross. With the score at 4-2, the Crusaders went on a 5-0 run thanks to kills from Lane, Johnson and Sanaea Simmons. The Leopards eventually made it 20-20, but Lane's services proved to be too much to handle with the third set ending 25-22, Holy Cross.
The Maroon and White started the fourth set down 4-0, but showed great perseverance to crawl back. Ulichney put the Leopards in the lead with a kill at 21-20, assisted by Vitale. Junior
Elizabeth Flynn was at the service line for the final three points, recording an ace on the final play to end the match (25-21). Â Flynn added eight digs and finished with two aces.
Lafayette's defense was a highlight of the evening. Freshman
Irelynd Lorenzen finished with four block assists and Gibson tallied two solo blocks and a block assist. In total, Lafayette contributed 10 block assists and three solo blocks.
The Leopards are back in action tomorrow at 5 p.m. as they continue Patriot League play, hosting Army.
