EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette volleyball team grabbed its sixth win of the season over rival Lehigh (25-16, 25-20, 30-28, 25-23) on Sunday afternoon in front of a rowdy Kirby Sports Center crowd.
Lafayette had many top performers on the evening, but the standout on offense for the Leopards was freshman
Ally Feczko. Feczko tallied 14 kills, hitting .287 on the evening. The Wexford, Pa. native also grabbed 14 digs and one block assist for her first career double-double.
The Maroon and White got off to a quick start in the first set. A kill from freshman
Emma Patmon and a service ace from senior
Alyssa Vitale put Lafayette up 2-0. Later in the set, the Leopards extended their 15-11 lead to 19-11 after kills from senior
Gracie Gibson, junior
Nina Kernan and an ace from Patmon. Sophomore
Carol Ulichney finished off the set with a kill, assisted by junior
Anna Penman.
The second set of action gave spectators four tie scores and two lead changes. The game was tied 11-11 before Lehigh went on a 3-0 run. A pair of attack errors from Lafayette and a kill from Emily Stewart made the score 14-11 in favor of the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh would go on to win the second set 25-20.
The third set featured 58 total points and many extended rallies, which had Kirby Sports Center fired up. The Leopards got off to a hot start after an error from Lehigh and kills from Patmon and Kernan, to give Lafayette a 3-0 lead. Lehigh was on its set point, before a kill from Ulichney tied proceedings at 26 apiece. Freshman
Irelynd Lorenzen then gave Lafayette the lead, but Stewart responded with a kill of her own for the Mountain Hawks. Lorenzen grabbed another kill and two kills from Patmon awarded the Leopards
with a win in a tight third set 30-28.
Lehigh got out to a 2-0 lead to start the fourth set. Lafayette clawed its way back to 9-9 after a kill from Ulichney. Ulichney was a big boost on offense, tallying eight kills while hitting .316. Penman eventually won the match for the Leopards with a sneaky kill, giving the Maroon and White its sixth win of the season.
Lafayette is back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday as it travels to Washington D.C. to continue conference play against American.
