Leopards Battle No. 13 Princeton to a 1-1 Draw

Zaffanella scores her fourth goal of the season

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette women's soccer battled 13th-ranked Princeton to a hard-fought 1-1 draw on Tuesday, in the first match featuring a nationally ranked opponent at Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.

Princeton struck first in the 27th minute, when Madison Curry dribbled past the Lafayette defense and chipped a shot into the bottom right corner of the goal, to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the first half, but in the 53rd minute, Lafayette freshman Nadia Zaffanella received a pass from senior Emily Coe. Zaffanella's first shot was blocked, but the rebound came right back to the Ellington, Conn. native, who this time rocketed a right-footed shot past goalkeeper Tyler McCamey to tie the match 1-1. The goal was Zaffanella's fourth of the season, which ties her for the team lead.

The Lafayette defense continued to keep the Tigers at bay, preventing Princeton from scoring. The Tigers' best chance came in the 90th minute, when Heather MacNab blasted a shot on goal, but an acrobatic diving save by Lafayette sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Miniutti extinguished Princeton's offensive threat and kept the match tied 1-1, which proved to be the final score.

Lafayette ended the evening with three shots, two of which were on goal. Zaffanella recorded all three shots for the Leopards. Princeton had 17 shots, with three on goal. The Maroon and White were awarded one corner, while the Tigers had five.

Freshman Catherine Apker earned her first collegiate start, playing 45 minutes. Miniutti made her first collegiate appearance in goal, playing 45 minutes and recording one save. McCamey played the full 90 minutes.

Next up, the Leopards welcome American on Saturday at 7 p.m.
