EASTON, Pa.- Junior guard
Abby Antognoli led Lafayette in scoring with 13 points in its 58-46 loss to Colgate Wednesday morning inside Kirby Sports Center. Wednesday's contest was Lafayette's School Day Game. Prior to tip-off, 1,500 fifth and sixth grade students joined Leopard fans to cheer on the women's basketball team in their third Patriot League game of the season.Â
Guards
Sauda Ntaconayigize,
Makayla Andrews and forward
Halee Smith all finished with seven points. For the Raiders, Alexa Brodie, Taylor Golembiewski and Morgan McMahon all finished in double figures.
Colgate hopped out to an early 8-3 lead with 5:23 remaining in the first quarter after Golembiewski knocked down a three ball. Antognoli's five first-quarter points halted Colgate's run, cutting Lafayette's deficit to five points (10-5) with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter. Colgate led 15-8 after 10 minutes.
The Raiders opened the second quarter with a 10-3 run courtesy of buckets from Tiasia McMillan, Sophia Diehl, Golembiewski and Brodie. Lafayette
responded with its own 8-0 spurt, putting it within six-points (25-19) with 4:06 remaining in the half. A late jumper from Smith cut Colgate's lead to nine (30-21) heading into the intermission.
In the third quarter, both teams shot 35.7 percent from the floor, but Lafayette outshot Colgate from deep, netting 50 percent. The Raiders found the foul line three more times than the Leopards, going 3-for-3 from the line.
Freshman forward
Tasha Chudy (two points) began the scoring in the final quarter on a second-chance bucket in the paint. Colgate took its largest lead of the game, 49-34 (15 points) at the 6:30 mark thanks to a mid-range jumper from McMillan. The Raiders held a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the contest, capturing their 10th win while improving to 3-0 in Patriot League play.
Despite Lafayette's 31-26 advantage on the glass, a big factor in Wednesday's contest was ball movement and turnovers. Colgate dished out five more assists than the Leopards (12-7) with Madison Schiller (two points) and Brodie each racking up three dimes. The Raiders also turned the ball over four less times than Lafayette, which proved to be pivotal down the stretch.
Women's basketball is back in action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the team travels to Annapolis, Md. to take on Navy. Â
