Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Defeated by Navy, 56-47

Antognoli and Andrews combine for 26 points

ANNAPOLIS, Md.- Senior guard Makayla Andrews and junior guard Abby Antognoli led the Leopards' offense with 13 points apiece in the team's 56-47 loss to Navy in Alumni Hall.

Freshman guards Kyah Smith (18 points) and Zanai Barnett-Gay (13 points) led the Mids' offense, tallying 31-points between the two.

Lafayette hopped out to an early 9-2 lead thanks to buckets from Kayla Drummond, (seven points) Antognoli and Andrews. Navy then went on its own 9-2 run, cutting the deficit to one-point (11-10) after Smith drained a triple. Two threes and a fast break bucket from Smith propelled Navy to a 18-13 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The first three minutes of the second quarter were back-and-forth, but a triple by Smith handed Navy a nine-point lead with 4:29 remaining in the half. Another fast break jumper from Smith with two seconds left, guided the Mids to an 11-point lead at the intermission (34-23).

A 7-2 spurt from the Leopards to begin the second half, cut their deficit to seven points after Andrews drained her sixth field goal of the game. Navy kept Lafayette at bay, having an answer to each Leopard bucket. At the end of the third quarter, the Mids led the Leopards 47-35.

Coming out of the break, Navy took its largest lead of the game, 49-35 with 9:15 remaining in the contest. The Mids led 51-38 before five-points from junior guard Kylie Favours (five points) and a triple from Antognoli put Lafayette within five points with 1:17 left. In the end, Navy held on to secure its first conference win of the season, 56-47.

Lafayette and Navy were even on rebounds, (41) but the Mids' three-point shooting proved to be the difference maker in Saturday's game. Navy drained four more triples than the Leopards, while shooting an efficient 33.3 percent from downtown.

Lafayette returns home at 6 p.m. on Wednesday for its fifth Patriot League matchup against Holy Cross.
