EASTON, Pa. - Guards
Abby Antognoli,
Makayla Andrews and
Sauda Ntaconayigize all finished in double figures in the team's 62-55 loss against Boston U. on Saturday afternoon. Caitlin Weimar and Anastasiia Semenova combined for 40 points for Boston and Semenova went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
The game was back-and-forth in the first few minutes, but junior forward
Halee Smith (nine points) gave the Leopards a 7-5 lead with 3:40 to go after knocking down a three-pointer. From that moment on, the Terriers went on a 9-0 spurt to take a 14-7 lead after 10 minutes.
Lafayette opened the second quarter with a 12-3 run and Ntaconayigize gave it the lead with a triple with just over six minutes remaining in the half. Both teams fought hard in the paint for the next three minutes, but a pair of Semenova free throws gave the Terriers a three-point lead with three minutes to go. At the intermission, Boston U. held a five-point advantage, 28-23.
Coming out of the break, the Terriers dropped in 10 points in three minutes propelling them to a 13-point lead (38-25), their largest of the contest. After being down by double-digits for the majority of the quarter, two huge buckets from Andrews and Antognoli cut Lafayette's deficit to six-points (45-39) to end the third quarter.
The Leopards clawed their way back to only being down three-points after Antognoli drained a mid-range jumper with 4:53 remaining in the game. After two quick buckets from Kelsi Mingo and Weimar, Semenova drained a clutch triple to give the Terriers a 10-point lead (61-51) with just under three minutes to play. In the end, Boston U. held on to win 62-55.
A key part in Saturday's contest was getting to the foul line. The Terriers attempted 27 free throws and drained 19 of them for 70.4 percent. The Leopards only found the line nine times, making 66.7 percent of their attempts.
Lafayette is back in Kirby Sports Center at 11 a.m. on Wednesday as it hosts its School Day Game when 1,500 fifth and sixth graders from the Easton Area School District will attend the game.
