WEST POINT, N.Y. - On a cold and windy night, Lafayette women's soccer battled a nine-win Army team to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday at Clinton Field.Â
Both teams played outstanding defense in the first half. Army held Lafayette to just one shot by sophomore
Nadia Zaffanella. Sophomore
Catherine Apker led the Maroon and White's defensive effort, recording three saves in the first 45 minutes of play. The best stop by the Homer, N.Y. native came in the 36th minute when she was forced to make a diving stop on a strike by Sabrina Rogers. The match remained deadlocked 0-0 as the teams headed to the halftime break.
In second half, one of the Leopards' best opportunities to score came in the 51
st minute, when a close-range shot by junior
Katrina Santelli was deflected by Army goalkeeper Sage Strohman and then an attempt on the rebound by senior
Michaela Salvati was blocked. The Leopards continued to put pressure on Strohman. In the 65
th minute, freshman
Camryn Fitch forced the Black Kinghts' keeper to make another athletic save to keep the score tied. Lafayette's last chance to score came in the 90
th minute when
Sofia Ruggiero ripped a shot from the left side of the goal, but Strohman was able to make the save and keep the score 0-0, which proved to be the final.
Lafayette concluded the night with eight shots, while Army had 16. The Leopards recorded three shots on goal and the Black Knights tallied seven. The Leopards were led in shots by junior
April McDonald and Ruggerio, both of whom had two.
Apker went the distance in goal, playing the full 90 minutes, recording seven saves and earning her seventh shutout of the season. Her Army counterpart, Strohman, also played 90 minutes and was credited with three saves.
Next up for the Leopards is their final regular-season road test, when they travel to Colgate on Saturday for a match at 6 p.m.
