Ruggiero's Two First-Half Goals Propel Lafayette to Victory at American

Ruggiero scores her first collegiate goal

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Sofia Ruggiero's two first-half goals propelled Lafayette to a 3-0 win over American on Saturday at Maryland SoccerPlex.

The Leopards wasted no time in getting on the board, as Ruggiero started the scoring in the 34th minute. Ruggiero found an open lane to the goal down the middle of the field and blasted a long range shot into the bottom right corner of the goal to give the Maroon and White a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first collegiate goal for Ruggiero.

In the 42nd minute, Lafayette found the back of the net again. Ruggiero broke up an American pass and had a one-on-one opportunity with the Eagles' keeper, ripping a shot to the upper right corner of the goal for her second score of the match, extending the Lafayette lead to 2-0.

Lafayette's offense did not cool off after the halftime break. Five minutes into the second half, junior Katrina Santelli received a pass from Ani Khachadourian. Santelli chipped a shot into the low left corner, bolstering Lafayette's advantage to 3-0 which proved to be the final. The goal was Santelli's third of the season.

Lafayette ended the afternoon with six shots, four of which were on goal. American had 20 shots, with seven on goal. The Leopards were awarded one corner, while the Eagles had six. Ruggiero led the Maroon and White with two shots.

Sophomore Catherine Apker started the match for Lafayette and played the full 90 minutes, recording seven saves.

Next up, the Leopards host Boston U. on Saturday at 1 p.m.
