Leopards Run Away With 42-10 Win Over Stonehill

Curtis and Bruce combine for five TDs as Leopards pick up momentum heading into Rivalry 160

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette football celebrated its seniors on Saturday by picking up a 42-10 victory over Stonehill at Fisher Stadium. The triumph comes in the Leopards' final home appearance in 2024.

Saturday's matchup allowed the Maroon and White to fine tune their game plan leading into a week 12 meeting with rival Lehigh. Junior RB Jamar Curtis scored 21 of the Leopards' 42 points, scampering for two scores and snagging one in the air. Curtis ran the ball eight times, gaining 51 yards, while pulling down two passes for 40 yards. In a game where he didn't play in the second half, Curtis collected his second straight 1,000-yard rushing season.

Classmate Troy Bruce ran in two touchdowns of his own, finishing with nine carries for 44 yards. QB Dean DeNobile was 18-of-24 on the day, passing for 275 yards and a touchdown. He surpassed 2,000 yards for the season and 4,000 for his Leopard career. Lafayette finished with 484 total yards of offense, including 204 rushing yards.

On defense, seniors Gabe DuBois and Semaj Cross picked up interceptions that halted Stonehill in its tracks. Fellow senior LBs Reggie Thomas and Tim O'Hearn collected six and five tackles, respectively. The Maroon and White's defense allowed 258 total yards.

On the first drive of the game, DuBois stopped the Skyhawks with a pick, returning it to Stonehill's 41-yard line. After a DeNobile pass to his RB, Curtis took a handoff 28 yards to the house, giving him 29 career rushing TDs and Lafayette a 7-0 advantage with 11:33 remaining in the first quarter.

On the ensuing Stonehill possession, O'Hearn pressured QB Drew Eason and forced an incompletion and a fourth down. The Leopards capitalized on the Skyhawks' punt. Junior WR Elijah Steward hauled in a 38-yard reception from DeNobile. The Maroon and White then scored when Bruce rumbled his way into the endzone for a 14-0 lead.

Cross' interception with five minutes left in the first quarter set up the offense on the Skyhawks' 37-yard line. DeNobile and company pushed the lead to 21-0 as Curtis took a 27-yard pass up the seam and into the endzone with 4:35 remaining in the first quarter for his second touchdown of the day.

With 13 minutes in the second quarter, the Leopards subbed in freshman QB Jason Penza who used his legs for a 26-yard pickup to end up a yard away from the goal line. Curtis finished off the drive with a one-yard run for his third touchdown to make it 28-0 Pards.

With 6:57 remaining in the first half, Danny Hurley booted a 37-yard field goal to cut the lead to 28-3.

In the second half, Bruce found the endzone for his second score of the day. The Leopards subbed in their backups, allowing QB Tray Mauney to pick up a rushing touchdown of his own, while freshman Xavier Johnson collected his second career interception. Classmate Micah Smith tallied his first career sack.

Lafayette wraps up its season next Saturday at Lehigh, when the two foes meet at 12 p.m. for the 160th matchup of College Football's Most-Played Rivalry. The 2023 Patriot League champion Leopards find themselves in a role of spoiler entering Rivalry 160 with Lehigh and Holy Cross tied at the conference standings at 4-1.
