Fourth-Quarter Rally Falls Short at Bucknell

White tallies 15 tackles and an interception

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lafayette had three shots at the end zone in the final seconds but could not rally in a 21-14 decision at Bucknell on Saturday in Patriot League football action.

Lafayette had a chance to push the game to overtime after holding Bucknell to a three-and-out. The Leopards took over at their own 33-yard line with 56 seconds remaining. Two passes from QB Dean DeNobile to Mason Kuehner picked up 19 yards and kept the chains moving. After burning their last time out, the Maroon and White had seven seconds to score. DeNobile targeted WR Chris Carasia in the endzone, but had his pass broken up. With one second left, a last-chance throw to Savion McKinnon fell incomplete to end the game and end the Leopards' series win streak at three.

The Leopards' previous drive was promising, as RB Jamar Curtis picked up his third straight 100-yard rushing game and 14th of his career, finishing with 109. Pressure in the backfield forced a turnover.

Senior Saiku White was a defensive standout for the Leopards, finishing with a career-high 15 tackles and an interception.

In the first quarter, Lafayette forced a Bucknell 3rd-and-16 situation thanks to a first-down sack by LB Tim O'Hearn. Bucknell RB Tyriq Thomas found daylight, picking up 45 yards for a first down. The Bison later capitalized with a 19-yard scramble by QB Ralph Rucker for the 7-0 lead.

On its first possession of the game, Lafayette set up shop at its own 38-yard line, thanks to a 28-yard kick return by RB Ethan Weber. DeNobile was perfect on the drive, completing all four of his passes for 55 yards and picking up two third downs. Thirty-eight of DeNobile's 55 yards came on a pass to Carasia, who outran the defense and tied up the game at 7-7.

The two teams traded shots throughout the entirety of the first half. On its fifth drive of the afternoon, Bucknell gained momentum after a 23-yard pass to Josh Gary. The hosts' attempt at the end zone was picked off by White, whose acrobatic one-handed interception kept points off the board.

Lafayette tried to use the turnover to its advantage, building a promising drive that saw wide receivers Carson Persing and Kuehner haul in passes. After a holding call on 3rd-and-11, DeNobile tossed a pass to Curtis. He gained 19 yards but was two yards short of the first. The Leopards' gamble on 4th-and-2 was unsuccessful, as a wall of Bison stopped Curtis just short of the marker.

The second half kicked off with the Leopards' longest drive of the season, a 13-play, 7:28 drive which saw a healthy dose of snaps for freshman QB Jason Penza. Penza picked up 31 yards with his legs and even joined the reception party, catching a pass from DeNobile. The Maroon and White took advantage of a roughing the passer call when DeNobile found TE Ethan Hosak in the endzone for the second straight week, giving Lafayette a 14-7 advantage.

Bucknell took control of the game on its next two drives, with touchdowns from Rucker and WR Eric Weatherly. The Bison led 21-14 with 5:33 remaining in the fourth. Lafayette was scoreless on its final two drives of the afternoon.

DeNobile finished the day completing passes to 11 different players, including Curtis, Carasia, Persing and Kuehner. In what was a homecoming game for the Danville, Pa. native, Persing hauled in five passes for 30 yards. Kuehner finished the day with seven receptions for 54 yards. Defensively, DL Tyree Morris finished with eight tackles and a sack, while O'Hearn collected four tackles and a sack.

Lafayette remains on the road next week, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y. for a 1 p.m. showdown with Colgate.

Notes: DeNobile moved into ninth place for career passing yards with his 177-yard performance. With 3,879 yards, he moved by Andrew Shoop '13 (3,705) and Sean O'Malley '21 (3,773).
