Lafayette Defeated at the Hands of Loyola

Sophomore middle blocker Irelynd Lorenzen finished with a team-high eight kills

EASTON, Pa. – Loyola handed Lafayette a conference loss (25-19, 25-20, 25-14) on Saturday afternoon at Kirby Sports Center.

Saturday's matchup served as Senior Day for the women's volleyball program. Prior to the match, the seven members of the class of 2025 were honored for their hard work and dedication over their careers. The seniors are Elizabeth Flynn, Carson Grace Toomer, Phoebe Glass, Anna Penman, Natasha Zorbas, Abby Nieporte and Nina Kernan.

The visitors found an early 6-3 lead, but Lafayette was quick to respond. The Leopards posted a 5-2 run, featuring a kill by Nieporte and several Greyhound errors to tie the contest at eight apiece. The next 16 points were split evenly (16-16), but then Loyola found its rhythm. Caitlin Churney (2), Lauren Link (1) and Kay Sekunda (1) all recorded kills down the stretch and Churney ended the set with an ace (25-19).

Loyola tallied eight more kills (15-7) than Lafayette in the second period and Link (5) and Churney (5) combined for 10. Churney also kept up her good work from the service line in the second period, recording two aces. The Leopards clawed their way back to a three-point deficit (22-19), but the Greyhounds put away the second set with some clutch kills by Link (1) and Riley Hamilton (1) (25-20).

Sophomore middle blocker, Irelynd Lorenzen, led both teams in kills in the final period (6), hitting a perfect 1.000. The Greyhounds again completed more swings in the third set, hitting .353 as a team with 15 kills. A kill by Lorenzen made it 5-4, before the visitors began to pull away. A 3-0 spurt gave Loyola a four-point lead (8-4) and it continued to put together small scoring runs as the contest wore on. Churney eventually closed the match with a solo block, 25-14.

Lafayette's Patriot League slate continues at 6 p.m. on Friday as it travels up to Hamilton, N.Y. to face Colgate.
