Women’s Hoops Completes Season Sweep Against American

Andrews recorded her first double-double of the season

EASTON, Pa.- Senior guard Makayla Andrews finished with a double-double against American on Saturday, scoring 22 points and grabbing a season-high 12 rebounds. Lafayette completed a series sweep against the Eagles with the team's 64-57 win.

Today's contest served as the Play4Kay game for the women's basketball program. Play4Kay is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing support and fighting all cancers affecting women. The women's basketball team wore its pink uniforms on Saturday to show its support for the Play4Kay Foundation. Prior to tip-off, a group of cancer survivors was recognized as the honorary starting five.

American grabbed a 14-7 lead with 4:45 remaining in the first, after Anna LeMaster drained a triple in transition. The Eagles dropped in another quick bucket, but Andrews' layup with one second left in the period held American's advantage to seven (16-9) after 10 minutes in Easton.

Lafayette opened the second quarter with a 10-5 scoring spurt, thanks to field goals by five different scorers. At the 4:26 mark, the Leopards trailed 21-19. The final four minutes of the second half were back-and-forth. The Eagles led 27-24 at halftime.

American came out of the locker room scorching hot, capturing its largest lead of the game (14 points) with 6:46 left in the third quarter after a 12-1 run. The Leopards' offense clawed its way back with a 10-0 spurt courtesy of eight points from Andrews and two from Abby Antognoli. The Maroon and White trailed 44-37 with 10 minutes to go in Kirby Sports Center.

Lafayette began the final period with a 12-4 run. Donahue gave the Leopards a one-point lead with 5:28 left in the contest. Antognoli knocked down a huge three-pointer at the 4:03 mark to push Lafayette ahead 52-48.

LeMaster and Ivy Bales helped tie the game, but big buckets from Donahue and Kayla Drummond restored Lafayette's four-point lead. American resorted to intentionally fouling with just over a minute to play. In the end, the Maroon and White captured their ninth win of the season.

LeMaster and Emily Johns led American's offense, combining for 37 points.

Bench scoring and getting to the line told the story in Saturday's matchup. Lafayette's bench outscored American's 13-6. The Leopards shot 66.7 percent from the charity stripe compared to the Eagle's 61.5 percent. Lafayette also attempted eight more free throws than the Eagles.

Women's basketball hits the road on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. tip-off against Colgate in Hamilton.
