EUGENE, Ore. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader to Oregon, 15-4 and 7-4, at P. K. Park.
In game one, Oregon got on the board first with a solo home run to left center field.
Lafayette struck back in the second, tying the game when
Ben Petrone hit a solo home run to right field, his first of the season.
Oregon went on to score the next 13 runs, six in the third, one in the fourth and six in the fifth.
The Leopards responded in the sixth, when Petrone again hit another home run, this time a two-run shot that also scored junior
Michael Zarrillo, making the score 14-3.
The Ducks scored again in the seventh, on an RBI-double to left field.
In the ninth, freshman
Teddy Cashman crossed the plate on a wild pitch, bringing the final score to 15-4.
Ryan Featherston collected the win, while freshman
Tristan Helmick took the loss for the Leopards.
In game two, Oregon again struck first, scoring three runs in the second, on an RBI-single and an error. The Ducks added another run in the third on a solo home run to center field.
Lafayette responded in the top of the fifth. Freshman
Luke Caucci singled to start the frame, and then senior
Michael Mallas drew a walk. A sacrifice bunt by freshman
Matt Colella advanced the runners to second and third for junior
Easton Brenner, who hit an RBI-single to shortstop. Junior
Blaze Fadio drove in another run on an RBI-groundout, to bring the score to 4-2.
The Leopards added another run in the sixth inning, when Mallas hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored sophomore
Ethan Swidler, making it a one-run game, 4-3.
Oregon extended its lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a Lafayette throwing error and an RBI-double, to take a 7-3 lead.
In the ninth, Lafayette put together a rally. Colella led off the inning with a double to left center. Consecutive walks to Fadio and Zarrillo loaded the bases for Swidler, who then also drew a walk to score Colella.The Leopards could not continue to capitalize on the bases-loaded situation, and the game ended with a final score of 7-4.
Michael Freuden was credited with the win, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up three hits and one run. Sophomore
Luke Craytor took the loss for the Leopards, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up five hits, four runs (two earned) while striking out six.
The Leopards close out their series with Oregon on Sunday at 3 p.m.
