WEST POINT, N.Y.- Lafayette overtook Army, 64-56, in overtime on Saturday evening inside Christl Arena to earn a season sweep of the Black Knights.
The Maroon and White shot 42.6 percent from the field overall, commanded by sophomore
Ryan Pettit's career-high 15 points.
Chris Rubayo also netted a career-high 10 points to go with six rebounds, four blocks and two steals.
Devin Hines and
Mark Butler each recorded 13 points as Hines hit 3-of-4 from long-distance.
It was a low scoring first half until Army began to heat up following the 14-minute mark, taking a 10-6 lead with Josh Scovens' 3-pointer.
The Leopards then made a 7-2 run using four points by Pettit to gain their own 13-12 advantage at 7:16.
Lafayette edged the Black Knights in an 11-9 run to 1:55, holding a 24-21 lead with shots from beyond the arc by
Eric Sondberg (1) and Hines (2).
Scovens helped Army overcome the previous deficit with a 3-pointer and a driving layup in the final minute to regain a 26-24 advantage at the halftime break.
The Black Knights opened the second half with a 7-0 run by 15:08, leading 33-24.
Rubayo worked on both sides of the court to even the score at 37-37, netting a career-high 10 points while shooting 5-for-5 from the floor. The Skillman, N.J. native grabbed four rebounds and two steals in the 13-4 Leopard stretch to the seven-minute mark.
Pettit and Hines teamed up beyond the arc for go-ahead buckets to stay above Army by four points, 47-43, at 4:27.
Army attempted to overtake the 51-49 gap with a 3-pointer at the 34-second mark to ice the game. The deep shot by TJ Small went off unsuccessfully, however, he made one resulting free throw eight seconds later to trail by one.
Lafayette regained possession with 22 seconds left in the game. Army fouled Pettit and freshman
Luke Rasmussen on the resulting offensive plays, each of whom shot perfect from the charity stripe, leading 53-50.
The clock ran down to four seconds with Army taking an inbound near half court, which
Kyle Jenkins blocked out of bounds with his right arm. Army had 1.9 seconds to try again, resulting in a long, high pass to Scovens, who converted on the turnaround 3-point shot from the top of the arc as time expired to send the game into overtime, 53-53.Â
The Maroon and White outscored the Black Knights 5-3, both teams securing each point as a free throw, for a 58-56 advantage at 2:57.
Pettit scored the first two-point bucket at 2:11, before Butler and
Luka Savicevic each added two additional free throws to seal the 64-56 final.
The opponents shot 35.7 percent from the field while being held to six total shots from beyond the arc. Scovens led Army with 24 points, shooting 8-of-13 from the field and 80 percent from the 3-point range on five attempts.
Lafayette out-rebounded the hosts 41-31, covering an 11-9 margin on the offensive glass.
From the charity stripe, the Maroon and White went 13-for-17, including 9-of-10 coming in overtime, compared to Army's 10-for-16.
Next up, the Leopards host Holy Cross on Feb. 7 for the Game Day Recycling Challenge match-up. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. inside Kirby Sports Center.
