EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette baseball recorded a 13-7 victory over St. Joseph's on Tuesday afternoon in the quarterfinal of the Liberty Bell Classic at Kamine Stadium.With the win, the Leopards advance and will host a Liberty Bell Classic semifinal on April 2 against Delaware at 3 p.m.
Lafayette scored first in the bottom of the first. Senior
Blaze Fadio ripped a double to left field, scoring sophomore Easton Swidler and giving the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
St. Joseph's responded in the top of the second, when Jakob Reed hit an RBI-single to center field, tying the game, 1-1.
In the bottom of the inning, freshman
Brandon Doubek singled to left field. Two batters later, freshman
Luke Caucci singled to the pitcher and advanced to second on a throwing error that allowed Doubek to score, handing the Leopards the 2-1 lead.
In the third, the Hawks scored an additional two runs on a Ryan Weingartner RBI-double and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Picollo, bringing the tally to 3-2.
Lafayette quickly responded in the bottom of the inning. Swidler walked to start the frame and was followed by Fadio, who cracked a two-run home run down the left field line, making the score 4-3. It was Fadio's fourth home run of the year.
In the bottom of the fourth, Lafayette added another run to its lead, on an RBI-single by Fadio that scored junior
Easton Brenner.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, sophomore
Charlie Chropuvka hit a solo home run to right field. Then in the sixth, Brenner scored on a passed ball, to make the score 7-4. Lafayette continued to add to its advantage in the seventh. Junior
Michael Zarrillo singled to right field and then scored on an RBI-double to center field by Doubek, bringing the tally to 8-4.
St. Joseph's responded in the top the eighth. Petrich drew a bases-loaded walk, which cut the Lafayette lead to 8-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, Fadio, Zarrillo and Doubek all drew bases-loaded walks, and freshman Caucci had a two-run single to left field, to extend the Leopards' lead to 13-5 in the 13-7 final
Junior
Jacob Maurer collected his first collegiate win for the Leopards, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up one hit, one run and striking out three. Colin Wablonski took the loss for the Hawks, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits, five runs and recording a strikeout.
Lafayette returns to Patriot League play on Saturday, traveling to Navy for a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m.
