Softball Tackles Mid-Week Doubleheader at Drexel

Harrington goes 2-for-3 in game one; Rowden makes second career start

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Drexel captured both ends of a doubleheader on Wednesday in Philadelphia, beating the Leopards 4-2 and 2-1.

In game one, Drexel's three-run first inning proved to be enough offense. Ashley Errico provided all of the pop in that inning, belting a three-run home run after a bunt single and a walk.

The Leopards were retired in order in the first three innings before getting on the scoreboard in the fourth frame. Back-to-back doubles by Megan Coyle and Regan Dillon accounted for the run. The Leopards continued the inning, loading the bases with one out, but stranded three runners. Drexel cut down Dillon coming home on a squeeze bunt before starting pitcher Natalie Alldred struck out Paige Sandidge to end the threat with a 3-1 margin.

In the fifth, Mary Grace O'Neill legged out a triple to score Kylene Gooch (walk) to trim the margin to 4-2. That was as close as Lafayette could inch, as Allison Hoppe held the Leopards to a pair of hits over the final two innings to garner a save. Jacqueline Cal took the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits over six innings.

In the nightcap, Lafayette could not get its offense started, as Hoppe held the Maroon and White without a hit in the 2-1 final.

Rookie Parker Rowden turned in a solid performance in the circle for Lafayette, giving up two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in her second career start.

The Leopards scored in the first inning. O'Neill drew a lead-off walk and promptly stole second for her 19th stolen base of the season. Two batters later, Katie Harrington's ground ball gave the Leopards the early advantage, but Lafayette placed just one more batter on the bases for the remainder of the game.

Drexel scored all of its runs in the third inning, fueled by a Madison Gayle solo home run and a run-scoring triple from Jackie Masone.

Next up for the Leopards is a return to Patriot League play this weekend. Lafayette hosts Colgate in a three-game series starting at noon both days.
