Leopards Thwarted by Bison, 17-8

Senior captain John Mathes led the offense with four goals and an assist

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Senior attacker John Mathes led the Leopards' offense with four goals and an assist in the team's 17-8 defeat against Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.

The Bison grabbed an early 3-0 lead with six minutes left to play after Hans Huber, Michael Myer and Cam Doolan all found the back of the net in the early going. With 5:13 remaining on the clock, Mathes beat his man to score his 19th goal of the year, cutting Lafayette's deficit to two goals (3-1). After 15 minutes of play, Bucknell led 3-1.

Mathes continued his momentum into the second period, bringing the Leopards within one with a goal at the 12:33 mark. However, Bucknell's offense had no intention of slowing down. Four-unanswered goals by Huber, Connor Davis, Henry Boykin and Myer propelled the hosts to a 7-2 lead with less than two minutes left in the half. Mathes cut the Bison's lead to 7-3 with a goal just before the intermission.

The third quarter produced 10 goals between both teams. Sophomore midfielder Aidan Kopen rifled home a shot just 44 seconds into the second half to give the Leopards a spark. The next eight minutes were dominated by the Bison. Davis' four goals with another goal from Meyer, handed Bucknell a 12-4 lead with 5:47 left in the period. Mathes set up fellow senior Jacob Freeman for a goal, but Davis and Will Hopkins both tacked on goals late into the third quarter. With one quarter to play, Lafayette trailed 15-5.

The Leopards outscored Bucknell 3-2 in the fourth quarter. Senior attacker Peter Lehman found the back of the net twice, while Mathes scored his fourth of the outing. Goals from Brett Callahan and Davis reaffirmed the Bison's comfortable lead (17-8).

Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Doherty made 13 saves Saturday afternoon, while Bucknell goalkeepers Jaz Zanelli (8) and George Herron (3) combined for 11.

Evan Prince went 15-25 for the Leopards at the x and freshman Nick Faccone won 1-of-4 of his faceoffs. Colin McLoy was 50 percent (11-22) on his faceoffs for Bucknell, while Brendan Coyle won two of his seven duels.
