BOSTON, Mass. - Abby Romano's game-winning goal in traffic helped Lafayette women's lacrosse down Boston University, 10-9, in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Boston took the first goal of the game at 14:24, shortly before
Sara Rogers equalized just one minute later, 1-1, in the first quarter.
The Terriers made a 2-0 run down to the 12-minute mark of the second period before
Abby Romano assisted
Olivia Hover's tally to close the gap to one, 3-2 at 12:07. Romano quickly re-tied the contest at 7:44 with a shot in front of the cage.
Haleigh Albrecht, assisted by
Kristin Igneri, put the Leopards out front, 4-3, at the halftime break.
Boston was held scoreless until Tessa Geddes netted her second shot of the day at 10:53 in the third quarter.
Emma Elmen (2) and Albrecht kept Lafayette in the lead, 6-4, with successful free-position shots at 10:16, 9:38 and 1:31. The Terriers used two scores by Abby Cotraro and Hannah Tillier to close out the third period, trailing the Leopards, 7-6.
Tillier broke open the final 15 minutes of play for the teams' third tie of the afternoon, 7-7 at 14:20. Romano and Rogers each earned their second scores of the day for a 9-7 advantage with four minutes on the clock.
Boston's Tillier went coast to coast to add a pair of goals to send the road contest into overtime, 9-9 at the end of regulation.
Romano was credited with the golden goal at 5:17 after two hard-fought overtime periods.
The Terriers held the advantage in draw controls (16-9), shots (32-24) and clears (22-23 to 28-31). The Leopards picked up 18 ground balls to Boston's 17.
Lafayette's senior goalkeeper
Lexie Coldiron made 14 saves in the victory, including one in overtime, while her Terrier counterpart, Natalie Aiosa, made seven.
Next up, the Leopards host Loyola on Saturday at 4 p.m. for the Miracle League game.
