SPARTANBURG S.C. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game series to Wofford, 14-2, on Friday at Russell C. King Field.
The Terriers opened the scoring in the first inning, driving in runs on an RBI-triple, a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run to take a 4-0 lead. In the third, Wofford added another run to its advantage, scoring on a sacrifice fly, to make the tally 5-0.
In the top of the fourth, Lafayette senior
Blaze Fadio commenced the frame by a hitting a single to center field. He was followed by junior
Ben Petrone, who lined the first pitch of his at-bat down the right field line for a two-run home run that cut the Wofford advantage to 5-2. The home run was Petrone's team-leading fourth of the season.
The Terriers responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly and an RBI-single. Wofford then added four more runs to its tally in the fifth and three runs in the eighth, making the final score 14-2.
For the Leopards, freshman
Matt Colella, Fadio and Petrone all had multi-hit games, with each recording two hits. The game was Petrone's team-leading fifth multi-hit game of the season.
Mike Eggert collected the win for the Terriers, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up five hits, two runs and striking out eight.
Mike Romano took the loss, pitching 3.2 innings,l while giving up seven hits, seven runs with three strikeouts.
The Leopards continue their series with Wofford on Saturday, at 1 p.m.
