BOSTON, Mass. – Senior captain
Peter Lehman scored the game-winning goal in Lafayette's 11-10 victory over Boston U. on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
This was the first program win over a Top-25 opponent since Mar. 20, 2010 when the Leopards defeated a nationally-ranked Bucknell team.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Joe Doherty made a crucial save with nine seconds remaining, before finding senior defender
Sean Rushton on the outlet pass. Rushton looked up and made a pass to a striding
Jack Massotto. Massotto didn't think twice before swinging a pass out to Lehman on the left flank. Lehman cut inside to his right hand and rifled a low shot with under a second left to play, beating Terriers' goalkeeper Will Barnes at his near post.
The Leopards jumped out to a 2-0 initial lead after sophomore
Aidan Kopen and senior
Kalman Kraham both found the back of the net. Boston U. reacted with a two-goal run of its own, courtesy of Louis Perfetto and Jimmy Kohr. After 15 minutes in Boston, it was all tied at two goals apiece.
Senior
Jacob Freeman opened the second-quarter scoring at the 10:28 mark off a feed from fellow classmate
John Mathes. Kohr grabbed another goal just 45 seconds after, but junior
Liam Sargent retook the Leopards' lead with 8:23 left in the first half. The next few minutes were scoreless, but Boston U. found two late goals, providing it a one-goal lead (5-4) at the intermission.
Sargent picked up where he left off with a goal to begin the second half, off an assist from Lehman. Lafayette regained the lead 29 seconds later when brothers Jacob and
Connor Freeman connected for the team's sixth goal of the day. The Terriers proceeded to score two unanswered goals, giving them a 7-6 lead with 10:28 to go in the third period. Senior captain
Charlie Cunniffe scored two goals in the final six minutes of the third, tying the game at eight goals each after Perfetto found the back of the net again.
The Terriers scored back-to-back goals to begin the fourth quarter. With 7:30 to play it became all about the Leopards. Junior
Riley Sullivan started the comeback with a goal at the 5:39 mark. Just over a minute later, Cunniffe fired home off a feed from Mathes. Lehman completed the comeback with tenths of a second left to give the Leopards their first program victory over Boston U.
Both Doherty and Barnes finished the contest with 12 saves apiece.
Freshman
Nick Faccone went 12-of-24 from the x Saturday afternoon, while picking up a game-high six ground balls. Matthew Fritz was 8-15 on his faceoffs for the Terriers.
The Leopards are back in action at 7:30 p.m. on Friday for their final non-conference matchup at home against Le Moyne.
