JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Nine innings was not enough for the Lafayette baseball team on Wednesday, as it defeated St. Peter's 7-6 in a back-and-forth, 11-inning contest at Jaroschak Field.
The Leopards drove in the game's first run in the top of the first. Junior
Michael Zarrillo reached on a fielder's choice that scored freshman
Matt Colella, who got on base with a single to start the frame. Lafayette led 1-0 after one inning of play.
The Maroon and White added to their lead in the second. Junior
Ben Petrone singled to left field and was followed by sophomore
Charlie Chropuvka, who drew a walk. Colella lined an RBI-single to right field that scored Petrone, and Chropuvka also scored on the play, crossing the plate because of an error. Sophomore
Ethan Swidler continued the Leopards' scoring, ripping an RBI-single to left field that gave Lafayette a 4-0 lead.
The Leopards pushed another run across the plate in the fifth when Chropuvka hit an RBI-groundout that scored junior
Easton Brenner and made the tally 5-0.
St. Peter's got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, to bring the tally to 5-1.
Lafayette responded in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice bunt by Brenner that scored senior
Blaze Fadio, bringing the score to 6-1.
The Peacocks continued to chip away at the Leopards' lead in the fifth, scoring three runs on an RBI-single, a fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly, making the tally 6-4. St. Peter's tied the game in the sixth on an RBI-groundout and an RBI-single to right field, knotting the score up 6-6.
Neither team scored again until extra innings. In the top of 11
th, Lafayette broke through. Swidler doubled to start the inning and was followed by Fadio, who ripped an RBI-single to left field to give the Leopards a 7-6 lead. Junior
Mike Romano pitched a scoreless bottom of the 11
th to secure the 7-6 win for the Maroon and White.
Senior
Drew Smiley collected his first collegiate win for the Leopards, holding the Peacocks hitless in one inning of work. Romano earned his first collegiate save. Marcus Monroe took the loss for St. Peter's, pitching 1.0 innings, giving up two hits and one run.
The Leopards are next in action when they travel to Bucknell for a three-game series that starts on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
