EASTON, Pa.  – The Lafayette baseball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader with Bucknell on Saturday at Kamine Stadium, falling 4-2 in game one and 12-11 in game two.
In game one, Bucknell struck first on a solo home run in the top of the third. The Bison added three more runs in the fourth, scoring on a Lafayette error, an RBI-single and a bunt-single.
The Leopards responded with a run in the fourth. Senior
Blaze Fadio singled to third base, and later in the inning junior
Michael Zarrillo hit a single to the pitcher. Freshman
Teddy Cashman lined an RBI-single to center field, scoring Fadio and cutting the Bison lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lafayette got another run closer. Junior
Michael Mallas led off the frame with a bunt-single. Freshman
Matt Colella moved Mallas to second on a sacrifice bunt and then sophomore
Ethan Swidler blasted a double to center field, scoring Mallas and making the tally 4-2, which proved to be the final, as neither team was able to push another run across the plate.
Tyler O'Neill collected the win for the Bison, pitching 7.0 innings, giving up six hits, two runs and striking out seven. Junior
Joe Skapinetz took the loss for the Leopards, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up two hits, four runs and striking out three.
In game two, the Bison again got on the board first, on an RBI-double down the left field line in the top of the first.
In the bottom half of the inning, Colella started the frame with a single to center field and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Swidler. Fadio then doubled to right field and scored on an RBI-single to center field by junior
Easton Brenner, to give the Leopards a 2-1 lead.
Bucknell took the lead back in the top of the second, scoring three runs on a two-run single and an RBI-double, making the score 4-2.
Lafayette again responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Colella, to cut Bucknell's lead to 4-3.
The Bison continued to score in the fourth, scoring on a wild pitch, a bases-loaded walk, a three-run double, an RBI-single and a fielder's choice, to make the score 11-3.
Lafayette responded in the bottom of the fourth, getting two runs back on a solo home run by Zarrillo and an RBI-single to left field by Colella.
In the fifth, the Leopards scored again, getting two runs on a wild pitch and then a subsequent Bucknell throwing error, making the tally 11-7.
In the seventh, Lafayette tied the game. Mallas roped an RBI-single to left field and then later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Cashman scored on a wild pitch, which was followed by an RBI-single to center field by Colella. Swidler hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Mallas and tied the game 11-11.
Nine innings were not enough as the game went into extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Bucknell scored on an RBI-single to center field to take a 12-11 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, Lafayette junior
Ben Petrone advanced all the way to third base, but the Leopards could not push Petrone across the plate. Zarrillo rocketed a ball to third, but it was snared by the Bucknell third baseman, who recorded the 5-3 putout, and made the final score 12-11.
Graeme Carroll collected the win for the Bison, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up one hit and recording a strikeout. Nick Mulvey earned the save for the Bucknell. Senior
Joey Pence took the loss for the Leopards, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up two hits, one run and striking out three.
Lafayette is next in action on Sunday, when it hosts Navy for a doubleheader at noon at Kamine Stadium.
