EASTON, Pa.  – Lafayette baseball swept a doubleheader with Navy on Sunday afternoon, winning 3-2 and 6-2 at Kamine Stadium.
In game one, neither team scored until the bottom of the fourth. With senior Blaze Fadio (single) junior Easton Brenner (error) aboard, junior Michael Zarrillo ripped a two-run triple down the right field line, scoring Brenner and Fadio and giving the Leopards a 2-0 advantage.
Navy immediately responded with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, to knot the score at 2-2.
In the sixth, Lafayette once again stepped out in front. Junior Ben Petrone lined an RBI-triple down the right field line that scored Fadio and gave the Leopards a 3-2 lead.
Freshman Tristan Helmick closed out the game in the seventh, pitching a scoreless inning to secure the 3-2 win. Helmick gave up two runs on four hits over seven innings while striking out six in his first career victory. Brady Bendik took the loss for the Mids, pitching six innings, giving up four hits, three runs and striking out five.
In game two, the Leopards again scored first. In the bottom of the first, sophomore Easton Swidler drew a walk and then Fadio singled to left field. Petrone lined an RBI-single to right field, scoring Swidler and giving the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Teddy Cashman singled to start the second inning for Lafayette, advanced to second on a bunt by senior Justin Grech and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Matt Colella then drove in Cashman, dumping an RBI-single into left center field, extending the Leopards' lead to 2-0.
Lafayette added to its lead in the fourth when Swidler ripped an RBI-double into the right center field gap that plated Colella and increased the Leopards' lead to 3-0.
Navy got on the board in the sixth, scoring its first run of the game on an RBI-single, to make the tally 3-1.
Lafayette pushed another run across the plate in the seventh. With two outs, Brenner singled to center field and then Cashman lined an RBI-double to right center for a 4-1 Leopard lead.
In the eighth, Zarrillo (3-for-5) used an infield single to score Swidler. Brenner then drove in Fadio on an RBI-single to left field as Lafayette stretched the lead to 6-1.
Navy score a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly, but senior Adam Bogosian would not allow another Midshipman to cross the plate, locking the 6-2 win for the Maroon and White.
Sophomore Patrick Walega collected his first win of the season, allowing three hits over four innings while striking out two. Bogosian earned his second save of the season. Tommy Virtudes was the loser, giving up two runs on five hits over two inning..
The Leopards are next in action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Delaware in a Liberty Bell Classic semifinal.
