EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette baseball advanced to the Liberty Bell Classic semifinal, one win away from playing the title game at Citizens Bank Park, before dropping a 22-2 decision against Delaware on Tuesday at Kamine Stadium.
The Blue Hens got on the board first, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning, scoring on a two-run home run to right field by Aaron Graeber and a two-run double by Joey Loynd.
Delaware added five more runs to its lead in the top of the fourth on three-run double by Loynd and a two-run home run to right field by Andrew Amato, to bring the tally to 9-0.
Lafayette responded in the bottom of the fourth when junior
Michael Zarrillo doubled to right center field and then two batters later, senior
Justin Grech drove an RBI-single to center field, to make the score 9-1.
The Blue Hens' offense continued to score, putting up three runs in the fifth, four runs in the sixth and six runs in the seventh, taking a 22-1 lead.
The Leopards added another run in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to sophomore
Charlie Chropuvka, which scored sophomore
Ethan Swidler and made the final score 22-2.
Christian Colmery collected the win for the Blue Hens, tossing two scoreless frames, and working around two Leopards' hits, along with recording a strikeout. Junior
Mike Romano took the loss, giving up four runs and four hits in 1.2 innings of work. The right-hander also recorded a strikeout.
Lafayette is next in action on Wednesday when they host St. Peters at 3:30 p.m.
