Leopards Conclude Salt City Classic with 3-1 Win Against Canisius

Freshman setter Mackenzie Calhoun records career-high 24 assists in first start

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Lafayette College volleyball team got the better of Canisius in four sets (25-21, 26-24, 25-22, 25-19) for its second win on Saturday, after beating NJIT earlier in the day in five sets.

Freshman setter Mackenzie Calhoun had a career day, finishing with 24 assists and three service aces. Sophomore Ally Feczko and classmate Anna Van Wyk also had career highs at the service line, finishing with three and five respectively. Feczko (10 kills) and junior outside hitter, Carol Ulichney (11 kills), were the main hitting threats throughout the contest.

The Leopards led 7-6 early in the first set before gaining a five-point lead thanks to a pair of kills by freshman outside hitter, Destiny McKenzie, and two attack errors by Canisius. Lafayette took the first set 25-21 after a few errors down the stretch by the Golden Griffins and kills from Feczko and McKenzie.

Canisius recorded six more kills (14-8) than Lafayette in the second period and Ella Bourque's 13 assists were a key part to its success in the second. The Golden Griffins also held a 3-0 advantage in service aces, which led them to tying the contest with a 26-24 victory in the second set.

Feczko (2), Van Wyk (2) and Libero, Carson Grace Toomer (1), combined for five service aces in the third set. Kills from Feczko and junior middle blocker Hannah Ehrich-Pollock along with errors by Canisius gave the Maroon and White a 6-0 lead in the early going. Lauren Hubert and Sofia Hedqvist led the Golden Griffins back to a four-point deficit (20-16), but sophomore Emma Patmon and Ulichney recorded late kills, guiding Lafayette to a 2-1 advantage.

Setters Van Wyk and Calhoun both had two service aces in the fourth period, making it 12 on the outing for the Leopards. The Maroon and White finished off the match with a 25-19 performance in the fourth set to capture their fourth win of the 2024 season.

Toomer (10), Feczko (10), Van Wyk (11) and Patmon (12) all finished in double-digit dig totals.

Lafayette returns to the court next Friday at 2 p.m. to face Winthrop at the VCU Invitational.
