Men’s Soccer Gets Back on Track With a 2-1 Victory at Army

Aydlett and Liebich netted goal for Leopards

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lafayette men's soccer team picked up its first Patriot League victory of the season with a 2-1 road win at Army on Saturday afternoon.

Neither team grabbed an early foothold in the match, as rain in West Point provided players with a slick playing surface.

Army was penalized a few times early on in the game, giving the Leopards a variety of set piece opportunities. The Maroon and White built more and more attacking momentum through their wide players Roy Biegon and Lawrence Aydlett as the match grew on. The Leopards were solid when dispossessed, creating turnovers with measured counter pressing.

Lafayette had the better of the chances in the first half, but couldn't convert, drawing 0-0 at halftime with the hosts.

The Leopards looked energized coming out of halftime and broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute. Aydlett picked up the ball near midfield before he drove with it and sprayed a pass out wide to freshman midfielder Cade Maglione. The Allentown, N.J. native served a ball to the other side of Army's penalty area where sophomore forward Roy Biegon tracked down the ball. Biegon laid the ball in front of a charging Aydlett who only needed three touches before firing Lafayette into the lead with his weaker right side.

Freshman defender Joseph Lee made a huge defensive clearance in the 57th minute that certainly prevented a Black Knights' goal.

In the 61st minute, junior defender Nicholas Liebich doubled the Leopards' advantage. Senior captain Carter Houlihan stood over a cornerkick, prior to whipping in his in-swinging service. Liebich beat his man to the near post and rose above the rest to blaze his header past Army goalkeeper Blair Camargo.

Now facing a two-goal deficit, Army looked to bring on more attackers to snatch points away from the Leopards. However, Lafayette managed the game well down the stretch, limiting the Black Knights' attacking opportunities. When the final whistle blew, Lafayette advanced to 4-4-2 on the season.

The Maroon and White return to the pitch at 4 p.m. next Saturday for a rematch of last year's Patriot League Championship against Boston U.
