Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Dennis Bohn and the Lafayette men's soccer team traveled to Boston U. on Saturday and left with a 1-1 draw on Nickerson Field.
Lafayette was on the front foot early, holding possession and senior
Lawrence Aydlett was causing trouble off the dribble.
As both teams battled in midfield, the Terriers applied some pressure with a string of corner kicks. Boston U. was excellent at limiting the Leopards' counter attacks in the first half by recycling possession in the attacking third.
Lafayette's best chance of the first half came in the 26
th minute. The Leopards were defending in their attacking third before Aydlett won the ball back. The Reisterstown, Md. native didn't hesitate to drive forward, blowing by his man. Aydlett's left-footed strike smashed against Terriers' goalkeeper Andrew Wike's post.
Ryan Lau had a chance to give the hosts the lead in the 29
th minute, but his first-time effort soared over the cross bar of Lafayette goalkeeper
Griffin Huff's goal.
The Terriers opened the scoring in the 39
th minute. Quin DeLaMater was the goal scorer and it was his second goal of the season. The first half ended in favor of Boston U., who posted four more shots on goal (4-0) in the first 45 minutes.
The Maroon and White applied heavy pressure in the early moments of the second half, almost scoring in a packed Terriers' penalty area. The hosts found their footing later on, by supplying service into the box whenever they could.
Boston U. had a great counter opportunity in the 51
st minute, but freshman defender
Jackson Vajda did well to track back and clear the Leopards' lines. Aydlett came close to opening the scoring 14 minutes later after freshman
Cade Maglione picked him out in the penalty area, but the forwards effort trickled wide.
Huff finished the day with four saves, and in the 69
th minute the Corning, N.Y. native made a crucial foot-save to halt Boston U. from extending its lead.
The Leopards had a plethora of half chances down the stretch, but sophomore forward
Roy Biegon leveled the match in the 87
th minute with a brilliant header. Aydlett held the ball out wide before he played senior captain
Carter Houlihan in behind. The skipper beat his man and served a ball into the box where Biegon leapt above the crowd to score his fifth goal of the season.
The Maroon and White pushed on for a winner in the dying moments of the match, but at fulltime neither side could secure all three points (1-1).
The Leopards return to Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium at 6 p.m. on Saturday for the team's Cancer Awareness game versus Holy Cross.
