WASHINGTON, D.C. - Lafayette ventured to American on Friday evening, with the Eagles capturing their fifth consecutive win and fourth straight sweep. A trio of Leopards (
Auma Mbeche-Odhiambo,
Carol Ulichney,
Destiny McKenzie) notched four kills in the match to pace the Maroon and White.
The hosts quickly collected a 7-3 lead to begin the set before a nine-point stretch (16-3) created breathing room. Elise Sterling and Salme Adeele Hollas contributed two kills each down the stretch to secure a 25-9 set one win. American tallied 14 kills in the opening set, in comparison to Lafayette's five. Mbeche-Odhiambo (2) and
Ally Feczko (2) led the Leopards in kills in the first set.
The second set started with both teams trading points early on. McKenzie found her spot for a kill, cutting into the Eagles' lead (8-7). American responded with a 14-3 run, pushing its advantage to 22-10. The hosts solidified a 25-12 win in the second set shortly after, courtesy of kills from Sophie Dufour and Prinzez Zeck.Â
The Leopards jumped out to a 5-4 lead in the final set, with an ace and kill from McKenzie pushing the Maroon and White forward. The Eagles followed with a flurry of multi-point stretches, including two separate five-point runs to win set three, 25-14. Within the set, McKenzie and Ulichney recorded two kills each.
Mackenzie Calhoun earned two of her 10 sets for the match.
Abby Nicholson tallied a solo block towards the end of the set and now claims 63 total blocks this season.
Lafayette invites Holy Cross to Kirby Sports Center on Saturday for a 6 p.m. meeting. The match will serve as the Leopards' Pink Out game, with proceeds benefitting The Pink Fund.
