Late Goal Pushes Holy Cross Past Leopards

Zaffanella had three shots for Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette women's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to Holy Cross on a rain-soaked Saturday evening at Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.

Both teams had multiple chances to score in the first half, but none of Lafayette's eight shots nor any of Holy Cross' five attempts posed a major threat to either team's keeper. The match went to the halftime break knotted at 0-0.

Lafayette's two best opportunities to score in the second half came in the 63rd minute on a header by senior Katrina Santelli and in the 70th minute on a strike from the left side of the goal by senior Sofia Ruggiero, both of which forced Holy Cross goalkeeper, Aubrey Haesche, to make acrobatic saves.

In the 82nd minute, Sam Halligan broke the scoreless tie on a give-and-go play with Ava Graham. Halligan chipped the ball into the goal, to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. For the remaining eight minutes, Holy Cross dominated possession of the ball, and the match ended in a 1-0 decision.

Junior goalkeeper Catherine Apker had seven saves for the Maroon and White, playing the full 90 minutes. Her Crusader counterpart, Haesche, also played 90 minutes and had eight saves.

Lafayette was led by Santelli, junior Nadia Zaffanella and Ruggiero, all of whom had three shots.

The Leopards continue Patriot League play, traveling to Loyola for a match on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
