Leopards Slip in Non-Conference Break at Quinnipiac

Field hockey played its second set of shootouts in 2025

HAMDEN, Conn. - Lafayette field hockey held off Quinnipiac through two overtimes, falling 1-0 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon.

Neither team found the net through the rain-soaked first half. The Bobcats took five shots (three corners) compared to the Leopards' three shots (one corner) in that time.

Lafayette had a solid scoring chance at 44:19 in the third quarter on a shot by freshman Lauren Kurek, but the Quinnipiac keeper made a split-kick save to keep it scoreless.

In the final period, both squads made crucial attempts in the circle which were shut down by the opponent. The contest was sent to overtime with the hosts leading in shots (10-8) and corners (6-4).

Laila Pasic and Lena Thedrian put together arguably the best try of the game with 50 seconds left in the first overtime period, denied again by the Bobcat goalie on the line after a series of quick passes.

Rain and wind kept picking up as the teams were forced past the 70th minute of play, locked at 0-0. Despite the weather and fatigue, the Leopards kept knocking with seven shots in the second extra session before shootouts were deemed necessary.

In the 1v1s, senior goalkeeper Raffi Fragomeni made two initial stops against Francisca Eschoyez, despite the opponent being gifted three tries after review. Stella Malinowski (penalty stroke from a foul on Josephine van Wijk) and the following Bobcat, Mo Quaile, also secured theirs.

Lea Good was denied near the stroke mark before Fragomeni halted Lucia Donati. Quinnipiac had a 2-1 advantage. The Bobcats' Katie Shanahan collected the game winner of the 3-1 lead since Thedrian was shut out on her final bid.

Lafayette held the advantage in total shots (16-11) and shots on goal (9-1). The hosts earned more penalty corners (6-5).

Lafayette's Fragomeni was pushed to make one save in regulation. Her Bobcat counterpart, Cristina Torres, made nine overall.

The Leopards return to conference play on Saturday against Colgate. Start time on Rappolt Field is set for noon.
