EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette volleyball was dealt a 3-0 loss at the hands of Navy on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center. Sophomore
Auma Mbeche-Odhiambo paced the Leopards with nine points, all of which came via kills.
The first 20 points of the opening set were split evenly between the two teams. Navy proceeded to capture four of the next five points (14-11), with Ava Toppin slapping down two kills during the run. Lafayette made a run towards the end of the set, collecting three straight points to cut the lead to 23-21. A kill from
Jada Aksu two points later brought the Leopards within three (24-22), but Farrah Eike closed the set out with a kill of her own.
The Maroon and White gained an early 7-1 lead in set two, with a pair of kills from
Carol Ulichney sprinkled in a seven-point spurt. A few points later, a Leopard attack error jumpstarted an eight-point stretch for the Mids (10-8). Navy and Lafayette traded scores throughout the set. A service error from Eike pulled the Leopards closer, making it 15-14 in favor of the visitors. Navy used four consecutive points down the stretch for 19-14 advantage before wrapping up a 25-20 set two win.
The final set began with the Mids taking a 15-9 lead prior to Lafayette making a brief run with five straight points (15-14). The Leopards' stretch saw points from two service aces from
Emily Gouldrup and kills from Mbeche-Odhiambo and
Hannah Ehrich-Pollock. The Mids eventually took the decisive set three 25-18. Mbeche-Odhiambo recorded three of her nine kills in the set, while
Abby Nicholson and
Destiny McKenzie tallied two kills each.
Lafayette returns to action on Friday, traveling to American for a 6 p.m. match.
