EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette surpassed Dickinson in a 79-44 final on Wednesday evening at Kirby Sports Center.
Caleb Williams put up a game- and season-high 16 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor and 3-for-7 from long range. The sophomore guard added four rebounds and four assists in the outing.
Overall, the Leopards shot 40 percent from the field on 67 attempts while draining nine 3-pointers. At the free throw line, the hosts recorded a season-high 73 percent (16-of-22) using 4-for-4 by
Andrew Phillips and
Christian Humphrey-Rembert.
Phillips burst out with 10 points in seven minutes to give Lafayette a 14-11 advantage through the start of the first half.
KaiMani Murdock and Williams netted back-to-back 3-pointers at the high-point of a 17-5 Leopard run to extend the lead to 15, 31-16 by the seven-minute mark.
The hosts outscored Dickinson 12-10 in the final six minutes of the initial period using five scorers.
Luke Bevilacqua converted a pair of free throws as Lafayette secured a 43-26 halftime lead.
The Red Devils tallied a trio beyond the arc to shorten the gap to 11, 46-35, in the first four minutes of the second half.
By 10:12, Lafayette put together a 21-2 run to go ahead of the Centennial Conference squad, 70-37. Williams and lone senior
Ryan Pettit combined for 10 points in the spurt.
Rookie
Luke Azzinaro made his first collegiate appearance thereafter, adding four points to the eventual 79-44 decision.
Dickinson was paced by Dan Moran's nine points, six rebounds and one steal. The opponents were held to just 16-of-58 from the floor, but were able to match Lafayette's nine 3-pointers.
Lafayette out-rebounded the Red Devils 48-39, including a 14-11 margin on the offensive glass.
Next up, the Leopards head south to Texas on Saturday with a 3 p.m. tip-off in the Moody Center.
