LEWISBURG, Pa. – Swimming and diving competed in the first day of the Patriot League Championships on Wednesday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. Day one of the four-day championships included five events.
The Leopards broke five total Lafayette school records to kick off the championships -- three relay records and two individual records.
For the women, the team of senior Sophia Toomey and sophomores Diedre McKenna Scudder, Sarah Newman and Natalie Johnson broke the Lafayette school record in the 200-yard medley relay, a record they set in November, by 0.01 seconds. The Leopards finished in a time of 1:45.60, ending in 10th.Â
Senior Maggie Ivie, freshman Sara Fente-Damers, sophomore Abigail Bebel and Scudder collected 10th in the 800-yard free relay with a time of 7:37.29, surpassing the school record by just over a second. Ivie broke the individual 200 free school record which she set in 2023 with a new time of 1:51.66.
For the men, the team of junior Tommy Weber and seniors Kurtis Campbell, Avery LeTourneau and Peter Kawash captured the school record in the 800-yard free relay with a 6:39.73 finish, almost three seconds faster than the record, earning seventh.Â
Campbell achieved the individual 200 free school record with a time of 1:38.77, the first Leopard to break the 1:40 time barrier since Justin Lloyd in 2020. Weber and Kawash were also able to eclipse 1:40, earning No. 2 (1:39.44) and No. 3 (1:39.96) all-time.
In the women's 3-meter dive, sophomore Mia Guster secured 10th with a score of 249.40 followed by senior Shaylee Daniels in 12th with a 233.95 effort. Junior Katie Hensell and freshman Amelia Mee took home 18th (221.85) and 19th (219.90), respectively.
"It was a great night for us. I am very proud of the swimmers and divers for their performances tonight," Lafayette head coach James Dailey said. "We broke five records and it's the first time the Leopards have scored four women in the diving finals."
"Tomorrow we'll compete in the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free events with the men's 1-meter diving and 400 medley relay at night," Dailey continued. "It should be another great day for us."
The Maroon and White will continue competition on day two of the Patriot League Championships on Thursday morning with prelims at 10 a.m.
