Softball Battles Iowa and FIU in Miami at Panther Invitational

Leopards will close out tournament on Sunday vs. FIU

MIAMI, Fla. – Lafayette dropped a pair of decisions to Iowa (8-4) and Florida International (8-0) on Saturday afternoon at the Panther Invitational.

In the opening game vs. Iowa, senior Mary Grace O'Neill went 2-for-4 with an RBI and classmate Kaya Ciccone-Cozart had a hit and plated two runs.

Iowa hopped on the board first, scoring on two wild pitches and adding on another two runs via Talia Tretton's two-run home run for a 4-0 lead.

The Leopards followed suit, scoring a run in the bottom of the third. Junior Kylene Gooch walked and advanced to second on a groundout, setting up O'Neill for the single RBI to left field to bring the score to 4-1.

In the fifth and sixth, the Hawkeyes pushed across four more runs, to take an 8-1 lead.

Lafayette kept battling into the seventh. O'Neill tripled to right center to start things and freshman Caroline Hall drove her in. Soph. Katie Harrington singled to center field, pushing Hall to second before Regan Dillon's infield single loaded the bases. Ciccone-Cozart stepped up to the plate and singled through the left side to bring home two runs in the 8-4 final.

Junior Marisa Powell started in the circle, allowing four runs on three hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts over 2.2 innings. Freshman Makayla Lecky threw the remaining 4.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout. Jalen Adams pitched 6.1 innings for the Hawkeyes, surrendering four runs on seven hits for the victory.

In game two, Lafayette could not get its offense going as the Leopards were held scoreless in an 8-0 final.

FIU enjoyed an early lead, taking advantage of two walks. Brook McCann (single) and Bailey Grossenbacher (sac fly) opened the scoring for a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers pushed across another run in the bottom of the second when Isabella Perez belted a solo home run for the 3-0 lead. FIU then added three runs on four hits in the third and sent across two more in the fifth to close out the game.

Soph. Parker Rowden started in the circle, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks over two innings. Freshman Sophia Alvarez-Backus finished the game, giving up two runs on two hits. Megan Kruger claimed the victory for the Panthers, limiting Lafayette to three hits over five innings.
