Box Score MIAMI, Fla. - Junior Kylee Sweet collected two hits and her first RBI in the new campaign in a 6-1 loss to Florida International on Sunday.
The Escondido, Calif. native came in the fifth inning as a pinch hitter and immediately knocked an RBI-single down the left field line, scoring catcher Maggie Klug from second. The Economics major tallied her second hit of the game in the seventh, smacking another single to left field. Sweet's two-hit performance raised her batting average on the year to .333.
Freshman Sophia Alvarez-Backus kept things in check until the fourth inning, where the Panthers took advantage of their opportunities. The inning started with a single from Collier Peaden, who later scored via a single from Janelle Martinez. FIU collected an additional four hits in the inning, allowing four more runs to cross the plate. The hosts scored an insurance run in the sixth when a double steal by Peaden and Kally Meredith allowed Meredith to steal home.
Lafayette tallied seven hits in the contest, with Sweet, Mary Grace O'Neill, Emma Ahlborn, Katie Harrington, Maggie Klug and Dani Rosner all chipping in. The Maroon and White left five on base as Kaity Patterson twirled a complete game on 99 pitches. Patterson faced all 27 batters, retiring them with a combination of fly outs and ground outs. Â
