O'Neill Secures Patriot League Softball Player of the Week Honors

Senior hit for a .529 clip at the Panther Invitational in Miami

EASTON, Pa. -- Mary Grace O'Neill has been named the Patriot League Softball Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday afternoon. The senior outfielder hit for a .529 average in five games at Florida International University's Panther Invitational on Feb. 21-23.

O'Neill went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base vs. the hosts in the opening round on Friday and then followed that with a 3-for-3 effort vs. Iowa in the day's second game. The Pleasantville, N.Y. managed two more hits vs. Iowa on Saturday and then a hit in each of the two final games (against FIU on Saturday evening and Sunday morning).

For the season, O'Neill is leading the team with a .500 batting average through eight games. She has contributed 13 hits, including three extra-base knocks, hitting primarily out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup. O'Neill has started every game and leads the team in runs scored in the young season. Last season, O'Neill started all 42 games in center field and led the team in hitting with a .274 average. The Economics major set a Lafayette single-season record for stolen bases with 24, eclipsing a 40-year old record. She is now tied for seventh for career stolen bases at Lafayette.

O'Neill and the Leopards will play their third tournament in as many weekends when they travel to Clemson University's Tiger Invitational for four games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Lafayette will face Indiana, Clemson and East Carolina.
