High-Scoring Contest Sees Manhattan Surpass Leopards

Cashman had two hits and six RBIs

EASTON, Pa. – Junior Teddy Cashman ripped two hits and had six RBIs, as the Lafayette baseball team dropped a mid-week contest to Manhattan, 17-13, on Tuesday at Kamine Stadium.

The Jaspers started the scoring in the first inning, driving in three runs in the frame and adding five more run in the second to take an 8-0 lead.

The Leopards responded with three runs in the bottom of the second, as Cashman blasted his first home run of the year, a three-run shot that brought the score to 8-3.

In the fourth, Manhattan added three more runs for a 12-3 advantage. 

Lafayette struck back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by senior Michael Zarrillo and a sacrifice fly by senior Easton Brenner. Lafayette trailed 12-5.

The Leopards added another run in the fifth, when junior Ethan Swidler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The sixth inning saw Lafayette cut into the Manhattan lead again, scoring four runs on a three-run triple by Cashman and an RBI-groundout by junior Ryan Ulisse to trim
the deficit to 12-10.

The Jaspers created some breathing room with four runs in the seventh, increasing their lead to 16-10.

Lafayette came back in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run over the right field fence by Zarrillo, one of his four hits of the day. The Leopards again cut into the Jaspers' lead in the eighth, as Swidler clubbed a two-run home run to left center field, making the score 16-13 in the 17-13 final.

Nate Ryhlick earned the win, pitching one inning and recording a strikeout. Trey Zaffiro took the loss, tossing 2.0 innings, giving up eight runs one seven hits, while striking out five. Manhattan was led by Trevor Hansen, who had four hits, five RBIs and two home runs.

Lafayette is next in action when they host Penn for a three-game series on Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
