VILLANOVA, Pa.- Villanova used 12 first-half goals to best Lafayette, 16-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
Sami Carey's three goals and five assists paced the opponents, while
Sophia Spallone led the Leopards with four points on three goals and an assist.
Villanova broke open the game with six tallies in both the first and second quarters, split between nine scorers, for a 12-0 hold at the halftime break.
Carey added two of the Wildcats' three goals in the third period before the 7:12 mark to extend the advantage to 15-0.
Spallone ran down her first goal of the day from the 40-yard line, sending a rocket into the net at 3:32 to get the Leopards on the board.
Kristin Igneri, assisted by Spallone, muscled her way onto the scoreboard at 1:59 in the third period as Villanova led 15-2.
Spallone, assisted by Rogers' free-position pass, earned the first goal of the final period to cut the deficit to 12, 15-3 at 14:16.
Olivia Hover contributed a tally at 5:53, before Spallone added her third of the afternoon just one minute later in the 16-5 outcome.
The Wildcats held the advantage in draw controls (16-8), ground balls (16-13), shots (31-14) and clears (17-17 to 16-18).
Molly Terraciano and
Kennedy Carr shared the net for Lafayette, splitting 10 saves evenly. Their Villanova counterparts, Makenzie Fisher (4) and Cate Gallagher (3), made seven saves together.
Next up, the Leopards open Patriot League play at Holy Cross on Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start in Worcester, Mass.
