Swidler’s Ninth-Inning Blast Propels Leopards to Victory

Brenner hits his second home run of the season

RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Ethan Swilder's three-run home run in the top of the ninth propelled the Lafayette baseball team to a 6-5 victory over UMass Lowell on Friday at the University of Richmond's Pitt Field.

The Maroon and White were led by stellar performances by Swidler and senior Easton Brenner. Swidler had two hits, which included a home run and four RBIs. Brenner went three for four with a home run and two RBIs.

UMass Lowell got on the board in the top of the third on a solo home run by River Hart, to take a 1-0 lead.

Lafayette struck back in the sixth, as Brenner clubbed his second home run of the season to tie the game, 1-1.

In the seventh, the Leopards took the lead on an RBI-single by Swidler that scored sophomore Teddy Cashman and gave the Maroon and White a 2-1 advantage. Lafayette added another run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Brenner, bringing the tally to 3-1.

In the bottom of the frame, the River Hawks took back the lead , scoring on a two-run double by Brandon Fish and an RBI-double by Carlos Martinez, for a 4-3 advantage.

Lafayette's offense came alive in the ninth, as freshman Liam Ebbs singled to center field and sophomore Matt Colella was hit by a pitch. Then Swidler, on the first pitch he saw from River Hawks' reliever Andres Hulfachor, ripped a three-run home run to center field to put the Leopards ahead 6-4. The home run was Swidler's first of the year.

In the bottom of the ninth, UMass scored a run and brought the tally to 6-5, but sophomore Ben Waterman shut the door on the Red Hawks and locked up a 6-5 Lafayette win.

Senior Mike Romano collected his first win of the season, throwing 2.0 innings, giving up four hits, three runs and striking out three. Waterman earned his second save of the year, surrendering two hits and a run, while recording a strikeout. Hulfachor took the loss, throwing 2.1 innings, giving three runs on two hits with two strikeouts.

Lafayette continues its series in Richmond, Va. taking on Richmond on Saturday at 10 a.m.
