RICHMOND, Va. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped a 9-1 decision to Richmond on Saturday at Pitt Field.
Junior
Ethan Swidler continued his hot hitting, recording two hits against the Spiders, along with an RBI and a walk.
Richmond struck first in the bottom of the second, scoring on a RBI-double to center field by Mike Elko, to take a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, Lafayette responded as sophomore
Matt Colella was on first and freshman
Liam Ebbs was on second. Swidler ripped an RBI-single down the right field line, scoring Ebbs and tying the score, 1-1.
In the bottom of the inning, the Spiders again took the lead as D.J. Pacheco hit a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Richmond a 2-1 advantage. The Spiders made the score 3-1 in the sixth on a solo home run by Phil Bernstein.
The Leopards put a runner on third in the sixth and loaded the bases in the seventh, but were unable to score.
Richmond scored six insurance runs in the eighth on an RBI-single by Aaron Whitley, a two-run double by Jordan Jaffe, a two-run triple by Jack Arcamone to take a 9-1 lead, which stood to be the final.
Tyler Rigot collected the win, pitching 2.0 innings, not giving up a run or a hit and recording a strikeout. Sophomore
Tristan Helmick took the loss, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up two hits, two runs and striking out three.
Next up, the Leopards will play UMass Lowell on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and Richmond at 2:30 p.m.
