RICHMOND, Va. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader at Richmond, falling to UMass Lowell, 17-6, in game one and Richmond, 16-3, in game two on Sunday at Pitt Field.
In game one against UMass Lowell, Lafayette struck first. Sophomore
Teddy Cashman hit an RBI-single to right field that scored senior
Michael Zarrillo, giving the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
The River Hawks responded with a run in the fourth, tying the game, 1-1, and scored five more runs in the fifth, to take a 6-1 lead.
With freshman
Jack Mislan on first base in the sixth, Zarrillo blasted a two-run home run to right field, to bring the tally to 6-3.
In the top of the seventh, the River Hawks put four more runs on the board for the 10-3 lead.Â
Lafayette responded with a run on
Easton Brenner's sacrifice fly, bringing the tally to 10-4.
UMass Lowell continued to swing hot bats, scoring another seven runs in the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, with sophomore
Luke Caucci on base, senior
Kaleb Willis ripped a two-run home run to left field, which brought the final tally to 17-6.
Nick Dirito earned the win, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up three runs, four hits and striking out six. Junior
Trace Florio took the loss, going 4.1 innings, giving up 11 hits, six runs and striking out three.
In game two against Richmond, the Leopards jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second. Freshman Liam Epps started the scoring on a sacrifice fly to center field. Later in the inning, freshman
Alex Barrist blasted his first collegiate home run, making the score 3-0.
The Spiders responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame for a 4-3 lead. Richmond added to
their its lead in the third, scoring five more runs. The Spiders added two more in the fourth and five additional runs in the fifth for a 16-3 lead, which proved to be the final.
Ryan Bilka earned the win, tossing 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and recording two strikeouts. Senior
Joe Skapinetz took the loss, pitching 2.0 innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits while striking out one.Â
The Leopards return to Easton on Tuesday for their home opener vs. Manhattan at 3 p.m.
