Leopards Downed By Canisius at PSU Invite

O'Neill and Harrington combine for five hits in loss

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Lafayette dropped an 11-3 decision against Canisius on Sunday at the Penn State Invitational. Canisius used a trio of three-run innings to pull away from the Leopards.

Ella Johel got the scoring started for Canisius in the home half of the first, shooting a double into left field to bring home the first run of the morning. Johel collected three hits in the contest, including a pair of doubles, and four RBIs. A passed ball later in the bottom half of the first allowed Johel and teammate Emily Ilano to cross the plate, making it 3-run advantage.

The Maroon and White wouldn't be put away without a fight. After a second three-run inning for Canisius in the bottom of the second, the Leopards capitalized in the third with Olivia Catalina and Jocelyn O'Keeffe on base. Senior Mary Grace O'Neill connected with a pitch, knocking the ball into left field for a double that allowed O'Keeffe to score from second while moving Catalina to third. O'Neill finished 3-for-3, leading the team in hits. Freshman Emma Ahlborn immediately followed O'Neill with an RBI of her own, laying down a timely bunt that allowed Catalina to scamper home and make it 6-2.

The Golden Griffins responded in their half of the third when Rebecca Hai got just enough of a pitch from Makayla Lecky to send it over the wall for a two-run home run. Lafayette scored once more in the top of the fourth when Maggie Klug's groundout allowed Katie Harrington to score the Leopards' third run of the game. Harrington tallied two hits in her two plate appearances in the game. The contest remained at 8-3 until Canisius pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory.

Freshman Makayla Lecky was given the loss after allowing 11 runs, nine of which were earned, on 14 hits. Olivia Manchester earned the victory after replacing Canisius starter Liv Herrington. Manchester pitched 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit versus the five batters she faced. Herrington and Manchester threw a combined 62 pitches to Leopard batters.

Lafayette will take the field at 3 p.m. for an afternoon matchup against Penn State.
