PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Twenty-seven combined runs crossed the plate, as Lafayette baseball dropped a high-scoring Liberty Bell Classic game to Penn, 16-11, at Tommy Lasorda Field on Tuesday.
Since 1992, the Liberty Bell Classic has featured eight Philadelphia area schools, each competing for an opportunity to play in the championship game at Citizen's Bank Park, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Leopards opened the scoring in the first as senior
Michael Zarrillo laced an RBI-Single to right field. Penn took the lead in the bottom of the frame, driving in four runs and making the score, 4-1.
Lafayette cut the Quaker lead to 4-2 in the second, as senior
Easton Brenner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Leopards' offense came alive in the third. Sophomore
Luke Caucci and junior
Ethan Swidler hit back-to-back RBI-singles. Later in the inning, Brenner drew a bases-loaded walk and sophomore
Matt Colella blooped a two-run single to left field, making the tally, 7-4.
The Quakers responded with eight runs in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth, to gain a 14-7 advantage.
The Lafayette Nine countered with four more runs in the seventh: freshman
Alex Barrist ripped an RBI-triple down the right field line, Colella slapped an RBI-single up the middle and freshman
Jack Mislan belted a two-run home run, as the Leopards cut the Penn lead to 14-11.
The Quakers drove in a run in the seventh and another in the eighth, to make the final score, 16-11.
Connor Darling collected the win, working 2.0 scoreless innings and recording three strikeouts. Senior
Corey Savedoff took the loss, giving up six hits and seven runs, in 0.2 innings of action.
The Maroon and White will travel to Navy on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
