ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Senior
Michael Zarrillo blasted his 22
nd career home run, tying the Lafayette all-time record as the Leopards split a doubleheader at Navy, dropping game one, 4-0, and winning game two, 11-5, on Saturday at Max Bishop Stadium.
In game one, Navy scored runs in the first and the second and two more runs in the fifth, which held to be the final the score, 4-0. Brady Bendik collected the win, pitching a complete game shutout and holding Lafayette to just two hits and striking out seven.
Trace Florio took the loss, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up nine hits, four runs and recording four strikeouts.
In game two, Navy again scored first, driving in a run in the opening frame on an RBI-single Ty DePerno, to make the score, 1-0.
Lafayette tied the game, 1-1, in the third on a sacrifice fly to right field by junior
Ethan Swidler.
In the fourth, the Leopards took the lead as Zarrillo ripped a three-run home run to right field. The home run was the 22
nd of Zarrillo's career, which tied the Lafayette all-time record of 22 held by
A.J. Miller and Bob Osipower. The Maroon and White scored another run in the fourth as freshman
Liam Ebbs laced an RBI-single up the middle, bringing the tally to, 5-1. Navy responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, cutting the Lafayette lead to 5-3.
In the fifth, the Lafayette Nine took an 8-3 advantage as sophomore
Matt Colella and freshman
Jack Mislan hit RBI-singles to right field, along with a sacrifice fly by junior
Bode Grieve.
The Mids drove in solo runs in the sixth and seventh to make the score 8-5.
Lafayette scored another three runs in the ninth on an RBI-single by Colella and a Mislan double, which made the final tally 11-5.
Tristan Helmick earned his third win of the season, working 6.0 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits and striking out five. Senior
Mike Romano collected his third save of the year, throwing 3.0 innings and posting a strikeout. Tyler Grenn took the loss, tossing 5.0 innings, surrendering 10 hits and eight runs.
The Lafayette Nine are next in action when they travel to Bucknell for a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12 p.m.
