EASTON, Pa. – Junior
Ethan Swidler collected six hits on Sunday, as the Lafayette baseball team split a doubleheader with Navy. Lafayette won game one, 4-3, and dropped game two, 7-4, at Kamine Stadium.
In game one, the Leopards took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly to center field in the first by senior
Easton Brenner. Navy tied the game in the top of the second on a bases-loaded walk. Lafayette wasted no time in taking back the lead in the bottom of the frame, as Swidler doubled down the left field line, scoring junior
Bode Grieve and putting the Leopards back on top 2-1.
The Mids again knotted up the game in the third, 2-2, on Evan Brown's RBI-single. In the bottom of the third, the Leopards stepped back out in front, 3-2, as senior
Michael Zarrillo laced an RBI-single to right field that scored Brenner.
In the sixth, the Maroon and White tacked on an insurance run, an RBI-single from freshman
Alex Barrist, to make the score 4-2.
Navy added another run in the seventh, but it was not enough and the Lafayette Nine took game one, 4-3.
Senior
Joe Skapinetz collected the win, pitching 6.0 innings, two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts. Senior
Mike Romano earned his fourth save of the season, working one inning while surrendering two hits and a run. Brady Bendik took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings.
Game two began just like game one, with Lafayette grabbing a 1-0 lead in the first, this time on an RBI-single by sophomore
Matt Colella.
In the second, Barrist extended the Lafayette lead to 3-0 on a two-run triple down the right field line that scored Swidler and freshman
Liam Ebbs.
Brown cut the Leopards' lead to 3-1 on a run-scoring single to center field in the third. In the bottom of the frame, freshman Jake Mislan's own RBI-single increased the Lafayette lead to 4-1.
In the seventh, Navy evened in the score at 4-4 on a two-run home run by Manning. The Mids took the lead for good in the eighth on Mason Ceccarelli's RBI-single, and then extended it to 7-4 later in the inning on a two-run home run to right field by Brock Murtha, which proved to be the final.
Spencer Stevens earned the win, working 3.1 scoreless innings and striking out four. Landon Kruer got the save, pitching 2.0 innings and striking out two. Sophomore
Owen Basso took the loss, tossing 2.2 innings, surrendering five runs on four hits, while striking out four.
The Leopards are back in action on Monday at noon when they close out their three-game against Navy.
