Two Grand Slams Propel Leopards to Rivalry Win

Baseball runs away to 19-6 win and series victory over Lehigh

EASTON, Pa. – Grand slams by senior Bode Grieve and freshman Jack Mislan powered the Leopards to a 19-6 victory over rival Lehigh on Wednesday at Kamine Stadium.

The Maroon and White were paced by senior Easton Brenner, who went 3-for-3 and reached base in all five of his plate appearances while upping his league-best batting average to .388. The Houston, Texas native drove in a run and scored three runs for Lafayette.

Lehigh jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first on a two-run single by Owen Walewander and an RBI-single Edwin Betances.

The Leopards wasted no time responding, taking control of the game in the bottom of the first with an eight-run outburst. Mislan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which drove in junior Ethan Swidler. Then Grieve belted a grand slam to right field. Later in the inning, reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Alex Barrist delivered a two-run single up the middle, and Brenner blooped an RBI-single to left.

The Mountain Hawks got back on the board in the second on an RBI-double to right field by Aidan Quinn, making the score 8-4. Then in the bottom of the frame, the Leopards extended their lead to 9-4, scoring on a Lehigh error.

Lafayette was not done scoring. In the third, senior Michael Zarrillo ripped a three-run double to right field, Mislan slammed an RBI-double to center and Swidler laced a two-run single, giving the Leopards a 15-4 lead.

In the fourth, Mislan hit the second grand slam of the game, his fourth home run of the year, which increased the Lafayette advantage to 19-4.

Sophomore Owen Basso collected his third win of the season, pitching two innings, giving up one run on two hits while striking out six. David Andolina took the loss, working 0.2 innings, giving up six runs on three hits.

The Leopards return to the road when they travel to Army on Saturday to start a three-game series at 12 p.m.
