Leopards Wrap Up Home Slate on Senior Day

O'Neill and Ciccone-Cozart recognized during Sunday Doubleheader

EASTON, Pa. - Army took both legs of a Sunday doubleheader against Lafayette, securing 2-1 and 6-4 decisions at Metzgar Fields.

Prior to the first game, the Leopards celebrated Senior Day, recognizing Mary Grace O'Neill and Kaya Ciccone-Cozart for their hard work and dedication to the softball program.

Game one began with a scoreless first frame before Army jumped out to a one-run lead in the second with an infield single, courtesy of Annie Christiana.

The Maroon and White responded with a run of their own in the home half of the third. After two quick outs, O'Neill shot a ball down the left field line for a double. An error by Army's Leila Hurst allowed Dani Rosner to reach first and brought O'Neill home.

The game remained a pitchers' duel between Army's Amanda Eaglin and Lafayette's Parker Rowden. Both teams placed runners on, but were unable to bring them home. Army stranded 10 baserunners, while the Leopards left six on the base paths.

Four-straight scoreless innings left the game tied 1-1 at the end of seventh.

In the eighth, Rowden allowed the go-ahead run on base with a one-out Maisi Sigler double before freshman Sophia Alvarez-Backus relieved her. Alvarez-Backus secured the second out of the inning, bringing up Breanna Coonfare. Coonfare connected with a pitch, driving it to center field for an RBI-double and a 2-1 lead.

A three-up, three-down inning closed out the 2-1 final.

Rowden took the loss after 7.1 innings of two-run ball. She allowed 11 hits. Army's Breanna Izzo collected the win and improved to 15-8 on the year, allowing one unearned run on four hits in 6.2 innings of work.

In the series finale, interim head coach Kelliner Croushore relied on freshman Makayla Lecky, while the visitors turned to Katelyn Flanders.

The Leopards struck first in game two. The second inning started with an Emma Ahlborn walk before sophomore Katie Harrington reached base on a hit by pitch. Maggie Klug's sacrifice bunt moved Ahlborn and Harrington into scoring position, setting the stage for Rosner. The junior squeezed down a bunt, with Ahlborn scampering home for the 1-0 lead.

Lecky cruised through the first three innings, allowing one hit to the first 10 Black Knights she faced. Army erupted for six runs in two innings, however, using a two-run home run from Sigler to recapture the game's momentum.

Alvarez-Backus once again entered the circle in relief, allowing another earned run in the fifth to give Army a 6-1 advantage entering the home half of the fifth.

The Leopards' sixth inning appeared promising, as sophomore Regan Dillon doubled to begin the frame. A walk from Ahlborn and a catcher's interference put Rosner on and loaded the bases with two outs. The Maroon and White could not capitalize, as a strikeout left the bases juiced.

Lafayette had one more chance for late-game excitement in the seventh. The inning started with a single from Olivia Catalina, who proceeded to steal second. After an O'Neill walk, Caroline Hall grounded out to the pitcher, advancing Catalina and O'Neill into scoring position. Dillon collected two RBI on her second double of the game, making it 6-3 Army. She later scored on a RBI-double from Harrington that put the final at 6-4.

Lecky, allowed five earned runs over 4.1 innings in the loss. Flanders grabbed the win, pitching 6.1 innings while allowing four earned runs.

Next up, the Leopards travel to Boston University to conclude the regular season with a three-game series May 3-4.
