Leopard Women’s Soccer Plays to a 1-1 Draw with Seton Hall

Santelli scores her second goal of the season

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Lafayette women's soccer battled Seton Hall to a 1-1 draw on Thursday at Owen T. Carroll Field.

The Pirates struck first in the 11th minute, when Danielle Hennessey sent a header into the goal from point-blank range. The Seton Hall score was assisted by Olivia Beauvois.

The Leopards had five shots in the first half, including two on goal, one by senior Katrina Santelli and the other by senior Sofia Ruggiero. The Pirates collected six shots in the first 45 minutes, with two on goal.

In the second half, Lafayette was the offensive aggressor. In the 74th minute, after the ball ping-ponged around the box, Santelli ripped a one-timer past Seton Hall goalkeeper Avery Strohecker, to knot the score up, 1-1.

The Maroon and White had a number of opportunities to take the lead late in the match. In the 84th minute, Ruggiero sent a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal, and in the 87th minute, senior April McDonald lined another shot towards the goal, but both attempts were saved by Strohecker. Lafayette's best chance came with 14 seconds remaining in the match. After a Seton Hall turnover deep in the Lafayette offensive zone, Ruggiero fired a shot to the middle of the goal, but it was thwarted by Strohecker, keeping the final score at 1-1.

The Leopards finished the evening with nine shots, while the Pirates had seven. Lafayette was led in shots by Ruggiero and Santelli, who had four and three, respectively.

Lafayette junior goalkeeper Catherine Apker played the full 90 minutes and recorded two saves, while Strohecker had five saves in the match.

The Maroon and White are next in action when they travel to the Lone Star State to battle Texas A&M on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
