NEWARK, N.J. – The Maroon and White dropped a 1-0 decision to NJIT on Thursday at Lubetkin Field.
The match's lone score came in the sixth minute when NJIT was awarded a corner. Off of the restart for the corner, the ball was sent into the box and chipped into the goal by Kelsey Ramos, giving the Highlanders a 1-0 lead.
Lafayette recorded nine shots in the first half, four of which were on goal. The best came in the 29
th minute by junior
Ava Murphy, who ripped a shot from just outside the box, forcing the NJIT goalkeeper to make an athletic save.
In the second half, the Leopards took seven shots, with three on goal. The first was a straight-on attempt by junior
Nadia Zaffanella from the edge of the box, but the shot was poked away by the Highlanders' goalkeeper. Sophomore
Camryn Fitch had the other two attempts on cage for the Leopards, both coming off set pieces. Both attempts by Fitch forced the NJIT goalkeeper to make a jumping save. The Leopards were not able to equalize the match in the second half and NJIT held on to win, 1-0.
Lafayette recorded 16 shots, seven of which were on goal. Senior
Katrina Santelli led the Leopards with three shots.
Junior
Catherine Apker played the full 90 minutes for Lafayette, recording three saves. Her NJIT counterpart, Mojisola Awodele, also played 90 minutes, recording seven saves.
The Leopards return to action on Sept. 20 when they open Patriot League play by hosting Colgate at 1 p.m.
