Hot Shooting Halts Leopards' Two-Game Winning Streak

Junior guard Teresa Kiewiet netted 17 points in the loss

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette women's basketball hosted Navy on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center and the Mids walked away with a 97-58 victory, led by 26 points by Zanai Barnett-Gay. The visitors finished the outing shooting 57.6 percent from the field (38-66) and 44.4 percent from downtown (12-27).

Navy struck first with a triple 47 seconds into the contest, but guards Haylie Adamski (3) and Teresa Kiewiet (4) handed the Leopards an early 7-5 lead at the 7:19 mark. The visitors quickly tied it at seven apiece, but then Lafayette put together defensive stops as part of an 8-2 run (15-9). The Mids caught fire in the final five minutes of the first quarter and led Lafayette 21-17 when 10 minutes had expired.

The visitors outscored the Maroon and White 24-16 in the second stanza thanks to a 10-point quarter from Barnett-Gay. Lafayette trailed by as many as 15 points in the period (42-27), but with 2:47 to go a 4-0 spurt cut its deficit to 11 points. After 20 minutes in Easton, Navy held onto a 15-point advantage (48-33).

Tim Taylor's group continued to fire on all cylinders in the second half, which guided the Mids to their ninth win of the season and third in Patriot League play. The Leopards fell to 6-9 and 2-2 in conference action.

Points in the paint and scores off turnovers were the keys to Saturday's game. Navy dominated the game under the rim, scoring 48 points in the lane compared to Lafayette's 18. The Mids also made the most of their forced turnovers, netting 36 points from them, while Lafayette tallied just nine.

The Maroon and White are back on the road for their next game on Wednesday at Bucknell. Tipoff is at 5 p.m. and live coverage can be viewed on ESPN+.
